Current name – Hymenopellis radicata (according to Species Fungorum).
Xerula root attracts attention right away, she is able to surprise with her appearance and presents a very special look.
Hat: 2-8 cm in diameter. But, because of the very high legs, it seems that the hat is much smaller. In young the age has the shape of a hemisphere, in the process of maturation gradually opens and becomes almost prostrate, while maintaining this noticeable tubercle in the center. The surface of the cap in moderation mucosa with pronounced radial wrinkles. Color changeable, from olive, dun, to dirty yellow.
Pulp: light, thin, watery, without special taste and smell.
Records: moderately rare, in places youthful adhered, then become free. The color of the plates as mushroom ripening ranges from white to grayish-cream.
Spore Powder: White
Leg: up to 20 cm long, thick 0.5-1 cm. Leg deep, almost 15 cm. Immersed in the soil, often twisted, has a specific rhizome. The color of the legs varies from brown in its lower part to almost white at its base. The pulp of the leg is fibrous.
Distribution: Xerula root meets mid to late July. Sometimes it comes to the end of September in different forests. Prefers tree roots and badly decayed woody remains. Due to the long stalk, the mushroom forms deeply underground and to the surface only partially crawls out.
Similarity: The appearance of the mushroom is rather unusual, and the characteristic rhizome process does not allow to take Oudemansiella radicata for any other kind. Udemansiella root easily determined by lean skin, tall and powerful root system. Looks like Xerul leggy, but the latter the hat is velvety, has pubescence.
Edibility: In principle, Xerula root fungus considered edible. Some sources claim that in the mushroom contains some healing substances. This mushroom can be safely to eat.
Remarks: Xerula root is in some remoteness from other types of mushrooms. It is easy to recognize with first glance: a very long leg and a short hat create the impression that nails come out of the earth that are not known by anyone it’s hard to call it even a mushroom.
