Hat: at first it has the shape of a hemisphere, then it becomes smooth and flattened. Slightly sticky, 5-10cm in diameter. The edges of the cap are wavy, tucked up. The color of the cap can vary from red-brown with a shade of purple to yellow with gray. The lower part of the cap of a young mushroom is covered with a white filmy blanket, which collapses with age.
Plates: wide, frequent, teeth adhered to the pedicle. Have a purple tint at the beginning, and then turn purple-black.
Leg: curved, cylindrical, slightly tapering towards the base. The upper part of the leg is yellowish, smooth. The lower one is covered with small flake-like scales. The length of the leg is 6-10 cm. Sometimes a delicate ring forms on the leg, which quickly disappears, leaving a dark mark. The leg diameter is usually 1-3 cm.
Flesh: firm, whitish in color. The flesh of the leg has shades of yellow. The young mushroom has no special smell. A mature mushroom may have a mild unpleasant odor.
Spore powder: lilac with gray.
Stropharia gornemann bears fruit from August to mid-October. Occurs in mixed and coniferous forests on dead rotting wood. Sometimes at the base of deciduous tree stumps. It grows not often, in small groups.
Stropharia gornemann is a conditionally edible mushroom (according to the unreasonable opinion of some experts, it is poisonous). It is consumed fresh after preliminary boiling for 20 minutes. It is recommended to collect young mushrooms that are not spread, which have the best taste and do not have the unpleasant odor that distinguishes adult specimens. In addition, adult mushrooms are slightly bitter, especially in the stem.
The characteristic appearance and color of the mushroom does not confuse it with other types of mushrooms.
Stropharia gornemann species is quite widespread up to Northern Finland. Sometimes found even in Lapland.
