Flesh: thin, yellowish. When broken or cut, it emits an aroma of withered grass or mold.

Plates: ocher or grayish. As the mushroom matures, they acquire a dark blue or purple hue or turn black.

Where psilocybians can be found, their counterparts also grow: the inedible tender conocybe (Conocybe tenera), which is distinguished by darker, dark chocolate colored plates.

Semi-lanceolate psilocybs grow when the summer heat begins to subside. The peak of their distribution is mid-August. Fruiting ends in early January.
