Mushroom mushroom (Agaricus placomyces)

Description: The cap is 5-9 cm in diameter, in young specimens it is ovoid, then flattening, in the center with a small tubercle. The skin is dry, white or grayish, covered with many small grayish-brown scales that merge in the center into a dark spot.

The plates are loose, frequent, in young mushrooms they are slightly pink, then gradually darken to blackish-brown.

The spore powder is purplish brown. Spores are elliptical, 4-6×3-4 microns.

The leg is 6-9×1-1.2 cm in size, with a small tuberous thickening, fibrous, with a rather steep ring, in young mushrooms connected to the cap.

The flesh is rather thin, whitish, turns yellow when damaged, later turns brown. The odor of varying intensity, often distinctly unpleasant, 'pharmacy' or 'chemical', is similar to carbolic acid, ink, iodine or phenol.

Distribution: Found, as a rule, in autumn in deciduous and mixed forests, sometimes near dwellings. Often forms 'witch rings'.

Similarity: The mushroom mushroom can be confused with the edible forest mushroom Agaricus silvaticus, the flesh of which has a pleasant smell and slowly turns red when damaged.

Assessment: The mushroom is declared inedible in some sources, in others it is weakly poisonous. It is best to avoid eating as it can cause gastrointestinal upset in some people. Symptoms of poisoning appear rather quickly, after 1-2 hours.

Note: The mushroom belongs to the section of the Xanthodermatel champignons, the flesh of which turns yellow, the smell is unpleasant, the ring is rather large. The population of the southern regions, in particular, the Stavropol Territory, including the author of the description, eat the mushroom after preliminary boiling. But it must be remembered that the mushroom is not well tolerated by everyone and it is better to avoid collecting for food purposes.
