Heterobazidion perennial refers to the species basidiomycotic fungi, Bondartseviev family.

This mushroom is often also called root. sponge.

An interesting story is the name of this mushroom. For the first time this mushroom was described just like a root sponge back in 1821 and received name Polyporus annosum. In 1874, Theodore Hartig, who was German arborist, was able to connect this mushroom with coniferous diseases forest species, therefore renamed its name to Heterobasidion annosum. It is the latter name that is today widely used for designations of the species of this fungus.

The fetal body of the root sponge heterobazidion perennial happens diverse and often irregular in shape. It is perennial. The shape is the most bizarre, like open or prostrate-bent, and hoof-like and conch-shaped. The fruit body in diameter has from 5 to 15 cm, and a thickness of up to 3.5 mm The top ball of the fungus has a concentrically furrowed surface and covered with a thin crust that occurs light brown or chocolate brown color.

Heterobasidion annosum

Perennial heterobazidion distributed mainly in countries North America and Eurasia. This pathogenic fungus is economically significant for many types of trees – for more than 200 a wide variety of both coniferous and strong-leaved deciduous breeds belonging to 31 genera.

Perennial heterobazidion can affect the following trees: fir, maple, larch, apple tree, pine, spruce, poplar, pear, oak, sequoia, tsug. Most often it is found in gymnosperms trees.
