External description At first the cap is convex, then flattened, with a tuberous surface and a tubercle. Thin edges, in young mushrooms – bent. Sticky and smooth skin, covered with thin scales – especially closer to the edge. The stem is cylindrical or slightly narrowed at the base, sometimes curved. It has a sticky surface covered with fluff on the top. Quite rare wide plates that descend along the stem. Watery, soft, white flesh, practically odorless or slightly smelling of earth, indistinguishable taste. Ellipsoid-fusiform or ellipsoidal smooth white spores, 7.5-11 x 3.5-4.5 microns. The scales covering the cap are first whitish, then yellow. When rubbed, the skin turns yellow. First, the leg is solid, then hollow. At first, the plates are white, then yellowish.
Edibility A good edible mushroom that goes well with other mushrooms in cooking.
Habitat Found in small groups in deciduous and coniferous forests, mainly under oak and beech trees – in mountainous areas and on hills.
Season End of summer – autumn.
Similar species Strongly similar to Hygrophorus eburneus and Hygrophorus cossus, which grow in the same areas.
