Luminescent mushrooms
Honey mushrooms, which have a huge gastronomic authority in the northern part of Italy, have another interesting feature – at night they can emit a faint green glow. This phenomenon has a very simple explanation – during the consumption of oxygen by the fungus, special chemical reactions take place in its cells. Despite the fact that in some sources such a feature of fungi is considered as a way to attract insects that are spore-distributing, the majority of scientists see this as only a chemical reaction, and do not react in any way to statements about the relation of this process to the reproductive system.
However, the ability to glow is manifested not only in the grass, which are quite common in our area. Other species also exhibit luminescent characteristics, such as Pleurotuslampus. In addition, many glowing mushrooms can be found in tropical areas such as Indonesia. In this country, there is even a tradition according to which girls collect luminescent mushrooms and make necklaces out of them, so that gentlemen can more easily see them in the dark.
